Annual Bike-a-Thon: This time for Nursery in Honduras

On August 31, volunteers embarked on a 335 mile bike-a-thon to raise funds for the St. Ignatius Nursery in the garbage dump community of Ocotillo, Honduras. Built by International Samaritan in 2008, the nursery has sat vacant and deteriorating since an earthquake three years ago.
For three days, our volunteer cyclists rode from I.S. headquarters in Ann Arbor to Harbor Springs, Michigan, tenting overnight at campgrounds in Ithaca and Higgins Lake.
Ann Arbor’s Bart Thompson organized the annual bicycling fundraising campaign last year, raising nearly $15,000 for food relief in Honduras. This topped his previous year fundraising efforts for International Samaritan’s school rebuilding project in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

Bart was inspired to raise funds after an International Samaritan service trip in Guatemala City in 2007. He is a graduate of St. John’s Jesuit High School and is currently studying at Stanford University.

Please note: It’s not too late to contribute to this year’s Biking for Honduras. To make a donation, call (734) 222-0701 or visit intsam.org and click “Donate”. The proceeds will go to support the nursery in Ocotillo.
