Paso a Paso: A Proven Tool for Success

After completing studies at the Francisco Coll School in Guatemala City, Ana Sofía Áreas Pena, Josefa Anabelly Baltazar Francisco, and Evelin Margarita Navarro received Paso a Paso scholarships. Sofía and Evelin are pursuing four-year physical education degrees in the capital city. Josefa is interested in accounting and hopes to attend a national university.
Angelica Cancinos, Paso a Paso program coordinator, helps students find schools and provides individual tutoring and counseling. She shared, “In many circumstances, not even the parents believe kids struggling in garbage dump poverty can achieve good grades for a good education. These students are an example – a reason – for others in the community to believe in all kids.”
Since 2007, International Samaritan has supported graduates of the Francisco Coll School to attend secondary school. I.S. scholarships provide continuing educational or vocational opportunities for many new students every year, including student costs for tuition, books, transportation, and uniforms. The cost is over $2,500 per student. Paso a Paso currently supports 51 students who attend one of ten different schools in Guatemala City.
