Many children who grow up in garbage dump communities fight to find their way out and struggle to dedicate time to their studies. In our time spent working with these children we’ve found students with exceptional stories.
Gloria is a star student at International Samaritan’s Santa Maria Básico School because of the goals she is working toward. Her dream is to to attend college and receive her license in accounting. Her father used to send them money from the U.S. before he got deported; now he is struggling to find work. She is the third of seven brothers and sisters and lives in the garbage dump community.
Jefferson is a star student at International Samaritan’s Francisco Coll School in Guatemala City because of his determination to succeed. He really likes math class and playing soccer goalie with his friends. He lost his father last year when he was shot by a drug dealer. His mother works long days in the dump. Jefferson wants to be a police officer when he grows up so he can help protect people “so that nothing bad will happen to them.”
