“One moment that really stuck out to us was seeing Oscar grow so much in just one day. Oscar, who is usually pretty shy, decided to come play soccer with us and the other boys today. Later in the day, we learned from Tania (our guide, and lifesaver) that this is the first time she has ever seen Oscar play. This really touched our hearts. One special moment for me, Katie, was while playing soccer with Oscar and all the other boys. We were all dripping in sweat, very caught up in the game, and Oscar turned around with the biggest smile on his face and said, “You are my friend.” This caught me by surprise, as I had no clue he could speak any English, and it broke my heart in the best type of way.
After the lunch break at Casa Tepeyec, we returned to the worksite of the house that we are building. The work today was especially hard, but seeing Veronica’s (the middle child of the family with which we are working) smiling face made it worth the while. While taking a break to play with Veronica, she told me, Anne Marie, something that I will carry with me forever. I had been teaching her everyone’s names and when I first saw her today she gave me the biggest hug and said “I said your name over and over until I went to sleep last night so that I will remember it for the rest of my life”. This too broke my heart in the best type of way.”
